The legendary hotel of Wroclaw, built in 1892 in Art Nouveau style, welcomed among other guests Pablo Picasso, Jan Kiepura and Adolf Hitler. Andrzej Wajda shot his famous scene with the glasses on fire, for his movie “Ash and diamond”. Marlena Dietrich stayed at this hotel during her visits to Wroclaw.

At the end of the XIX century, the Jews living in Wroclaw – a banker Wallenberg Pachaly and an architect Karl Grossem, purchased the lot on what used to be a church cemetery, a monastery and a jail. The hotel was built on the corner of Swidnicka and Modrzejewska Streets (old Agnes Sorma Straße). During the transitional period between the XIX and the XX centuries it lived up to the demands of the most luxurious European buildings. The porch with a balcony above the main entrance was added in 1937. especially for the occasion of Adolf Hitler’s speech given during the parade for Germans of the Sudety Mountain region. Twenty years later, tenor Jan Kiepura sang from that same balcony.

The hotel part of the building survived the war without any visible damage. In 1948, right after the turbulence of the war, which affected Wroclaw in a disastrous way, Pablo Picasso, Irene Joliot-Curie and the Noble Prize winner Michail Szolochow stayed here during the World Congress of Intellectuals. It is still a place where the famous personas of the cultural world would stay.

There was a department store located in the Monopol Hotel and at the end of the war it was seriously damaged. It was Rebuilt in 1961 and was changed into an elegant coffee house. There were Rich customers and those from the artistic world of Wroclaw who were regulars ( given the neighbouring Opera House and Polish Theatre). At present, to continue the tradition, there are plans being prepared to build a luxury galleria, like the one in Krakow and Warsaw.

In 1984 Monopol Hotel was placed on the list of historical monuments. Presently, thanks to its new owner, the hotel is being restored to its original greatness, comparable to the one from the era before the war. Carefully restored, Monopol of Wroclaw is the most recent addition to the Likus Hotel and Restaurants group, honoured for its achievments with prestigious awards (recently Prix Villégiature 2007 of Paris for „The Best Hotel Interior Design in Europe” for Stary Hotel in Krakow).
