Stary Hotel, the 1st price winner in the architectural category of “Best Hotel Interior Design in Europe” (Meilleure Architecture Intérieure d'hôtel en Europe 2007), perfectly blends together the history of the rich Polish renaissance noble house with the comfortable features of a modern hotel.

Hotel Stary is located 20 meters from the Main Square, and at the same distance form the National Stary Theatre. How it is described in one of the sentences on the hotel’s website:” They made it possible to reach beyond what’s material and visible”. An interesting anecdote about the hotel building is that Szczepanska Street, on which the hotel is situated, could be compared to the Golden Street in Prague.

Here once lived the world famous wizards and astrologists. The renaissance Krakow was one of the very few cities in Europe, where one of the official study topics was wizardry. Paracelsus, John Dee, Edward Kelly and even doctor Johannes Faust himself would show up on Szczepanska Street.

Like the other hotel buildings of the Likus Hotel and Restaurants Group, the Stary Hotel is also an example of a daring conversion of a historical building. The centuries of tradition and contemporary architectural solutions join the new and the old in a unique way. The building with the blue starry ceiling in one of the rooms was discovered during the rock portal renovation and is guaranteed to be the only one in its class. The purely gothic form of windows, which can be admired in the Stary hallway, can only be compared to those found in Wawel.

The ground floor has determined the whole concept of the hotel interior design. The presence of old brick, raw cement and gothic ornamental reliefs are in harmony with the rest of the details. The art created by ancient stone workers and illuminated by modern lights, looks its best after many centuries.

The present form of the building comes from the XIX century and is the creation of the Architect August Plasqude. In the hotel rooms you can see renovated fragments of the XVII – XIX century polychromes. Many of them are kept in line with the classicistic style, with a strong influence of Pompeii and Herculaneum paintings (cities covered with ash of Vesuvius in Nero times, discovered at that time by the archeologist). The placing of Pompeii motives was at that time a sign of sophisticated taste. The owner of the building, Piotr Steinkeller, a propagator of the classical antique style, initiated in 1838 after the first rail connecting Warsaw and Krakow using steam cars produced by his company.
