Renovation of the cemetery wall at the Remuh synagogue

The Liwa Holding, which owns luxurious hotels located in buildings of great historic value, is involved in the widely-known restoration activity, which is highly appreciated in the circles of art historians.

Another company’s investment, connected with erecting the residential and office building at Miodowa street, has resulted in renovation of the stone wall surrounding the old Jewish cemetery, located next to the Remuh synagogue.

Deteriorating for decades, completely dilapidated wall, is now emerging in all its glory. Thanks to general overhaul, the surroundings of the historic Jewish cemetery, so significant for the Krakow history, are becoming a proper city emblem.

Saving the Krakow monument from destruction is especially significant due to historic value of the place. The Jewish cemetery, founded in 1533, is one of the oldest in Europe. Great representatives of culture of Judaism are buried there: Izaak Jakubowicz, the founder of Izaak synagogue, the famous cabbalist Natan Spira, outstanding Talmudist Joel Sirkes called Bach, or originating from Italy Samuel Bar Meszulam, the doctor of Sigismund the Old and Sigismund Augustus.

Among the masterpieces of stonework from Baroque and Renaissance, rich in symbolic adornments dating back to Old Hebrew times, great significance is ascribed to a complex of tombstones of Moses Isserles, the wonderworker, whose grave has been visited continuously up to this day by pilgrims from all over the world.

The apartment block at Miodowa street is being built with observance to the neighbouring holy place, and following the rules and arrangements made with the local Jewish community. The reconstructed cemetery wall, adjacent to three building lots at Miodowa street, occupied by the apartment block, was erected on its foundations.

The building emerging nearby the cemetery wall is placed on new, separate foundations. The back wall is devoid of windows and in  the architectonically sublime way captures the character of the pre-war layout.
